1. Film icon receives achievement award for advancing global cinema and women's empowerment
**LONDON:** Renowned Pakistani actress Mahira Khan received a prestigious honor in the UK Parliament for her remarkable contributions to global cinema and her role as a cultural ambassador. The award ceremony, held in the House of Commons, was hosted by UK Member of Parliament Afzal Khan and supported by a cross-party group of parliamentarians, celebrating Mahira’s role in promoting cultural exchange and empowering women.
Expressing her gratitude, Mahira reflected on her journey from Karachi to international fame, sharing that she was the first woman in her family to travel alone, a pivotal experience that fostered her independence. She credited her parents for their focus on equal education and equal love, which inspired her throughout her career. Rejecting the term “self-made,” she acknowledged the family, friends, and mentors who supported her along the way.
“My parents always believed in equal education,” Mahira said. “There were people in my life who inspired and believed in me, and even during tough times, I was surrounded by those who encouraged and celebrated my successes.”
Speaking about her commitment to women’s empowerment, Mahira shared that her career has always been focused on opening doors for other women to navigate the challenges she faced. She also reflected on the progress in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, particularly in gender equality and pay parity.
The event was attended by notable figures, including High Commissioner Sarah Naeem, Trade and Investment Minister Shafiq Shahzad, and Labour Asians Society members, along with many public figures and community leaders.
MP Afzal Khan praised Mahira as a trailblazer, stating, “Mahira Khan’s journey is an inspiration to young women worldwide, proving that they can reach their dreams despite obstacles. She has broken stereotypes, represented Pakistan globally, and embodies resilience, humility, and authenticity.”
High Commissioner Sarah Naeem commended Mahira’s dedication to gender equality in an industry where disparities persist. “Mahira has consistently used her platform to support women’s rights and gender equality,” she noted, emphasizing the actress’s influence in encouraging women around the world to pursue their dreams with courage.
Maria Saroya from the Labour Asians Society highlighted Mahira’s role in promoting Pakistani culture internationally. “She has challenged stereotypes and paved the way for inclusive representation of South Asian voices in media. Through her work, Mahira has showcased Pakistani heritage and fostered cultural connections.”
Labour Asians Society co-chair Manish Tiwari underscored Mahira’s impact on women across South Asia, including in India and Afghanistan, acknowledging her advocacy for mental health and women’s rights.
Trade Minister Shafiq Shahzad celebrated Mahira’s impact on Pakistan’s cinema industry and economy, noting her success in films like *Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad* and *The Legend of Maula Jatt,* as well as her role as a producer on the sports series *Baarwan Khiladi.* "She is a true icon of Pakistani cinema," he remarked.
