Yerin Ha sheds light on change in 'Bridgerton' character Sophie's name
1. Yerin Ha plays Sophie in 'Bridgerton' season 4 opposite Luke Thompson's Benedict Bridgerton
Yerin Ha is offering insights into her role as Sophie Baek in the highly anticipated *Bridgerton* Season 4.
In a recently released clip, Ha is introduced as Sophie Baek, the love interest of Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson. In the show, Sophie is a maid who crosses paths with Benedict when she sneaks into Violet Bridgerton's masquerade ball.
The show’s runner, Jess Brownell, made the decision to change Sophie’s surname from Beckett to Baek, reflecting Ha’s Korean heritage. “A name is the first part of your identity that you share with the world, and changing a name can be so powerful,” Ha explained. “It’s empowering to have Sophie’s name fit someone who looks like me. All credit goes to Jess Brownell, our showrunner.”
Ha went on to describe how this adjustment made her feel more connected to the role. “It’s a wonderful way to feel like the role fits me, rather than me having to fit into a certain mold. It’s amazing how much that small change can impact you psychologically. I’m really grateful to Jess for doing that.”
Ha also spoke about what drew her to the role of Sophie. “I was attracted to Sophie’s character because she’s constantly facing obstacles — whether it’s dealing with her lower social status or hiding her feelings for Benedict.”
She further discussed the theme of masks, which played a central role in her audition scenes. “There’s this idea of when Sophie puts on a mask to hide her emotions, and when she takes it off and allows herself to soften. Exploring that dynamic was really fun,” Ha shared.
*Bridgerton* Season 4, featuring Benedict Bridgerton’s love story with Sophie Baek, is set to release in 2026.
