John Bass, the United States Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, visited Pakistan to explore ways to expand bilateral cooperation on economic and security issues. During the visit, Bass engaged in talks about countering terrorism, violent extremism, and enhancing regional stability.
State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, in a press briefing, highlighted that Bass expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s continued support in facilitating the resettlement of Afghans to the US. Miller emphasized the ongoing close collaboration between the two nations on these critical issues.
The visit followed Washington's announcement of sanctions against five entities and one individual for involvement in missile proliferation and technology transfers to Pakistan. These measures targeted China-based firms supplying missile components and technology to Pakistan's Shaheen-3 and Ababeel missile systems. The US previously sanctioned additional Chinese companies for similar activities in 2023.
In Pakistan, Bass also met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. They discussed the importance of positive engagement between Pakistan and the US, focusing on strengthening their bilateral relationship. Dar emphasized the need for productive cooperation, particularly in economic and defense sectors.
Additionally, Bass held delegation-level talks with Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch. The discussions covered a broad spectrum of topics, including trade, energy, security, climate change, and counterterrorism. Baloch stressed the importance of upgrading bilateral mechanisms to build a deeper, more meaningful relationship.
Bass reiterated the US's commitment to partnering with Pakistan to strengthen and stabilize its economy and praised the country’s resilience in facing recent challenges such as floods and terrorist attacks.
