At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus format summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for "unity of thought and action" to address critical issues like Islamophobia, climate-induced disasters, and the impacts of COVID-19 on countries. Emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence, dispute resolution, and multilateralism, he highlighted the increased incitement to hatred and discrimination based on race and religion, particularly Islamophobia.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 24th summit of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO at the Palace of Independence in Kazakhstan's capital city. PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of fundamental reforms in international financial architecture to make it more effective, inclusive, and equitable. He also emphasized that effective multilateralism is crucial for addressing regional and global challenges.
During his address, he reiterated Pakistan's commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes, opposition to unilateral use of threats or force, and combating terrorism. He stated that during Pakistan's 2025-26 term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), the country would pursue these goals and advance the SCO agenda in partnership with member states. He also noted Pakistan's rich experience and contributions to peace and security.
The prime minister congratulated President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan for hosting the SCO summit and expressed optimism that the Astana Declaration and other documents adopted would strengthen efforts for peace and prosperity. He also highlighted the sufferings of the Palestinian people, endorsing reports that label Israel's actions as war crimes and genocide. He called on the international community and the UNSC to ensure an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and protection of civilians in Gaza.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to strengthening multilateral institutions and enhancing global cooperation to achieve an equitable and peaceful world order, respecting principles of self-determination, sovereignty, and non-interference. After the summit in Astana, he returned to Pakistan, having been seen off by Kazakh officials and Pakistani diplomatic staff.
