PIA’s return to European skies soon as EASA’s decision due today

KARACHI – Ban imposed on Pakistan International Airlines flight by European Union flight operations is expected to be lifted soon as the Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is slated to announce a decision on the revival of flights today.

EU Aviation Safety Agency imposed a ban on national flag carrier after 2020 horrific plane crash in which 97 people died, and it started controversy related to licensing process for commercial pilots.

All eyes are on verdict as EASA recently visited Asian nation to assess the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and PIA crew, and expressed satisfaction with new measures.

Besides this, a four-member security assessment team from the UK Department for Transport (UK-DfT) found Islamabad International Airport’s security measures satisfactory. The team evaluated various aspects such as passenger handling, crew management, baggage delivery, and security measures for aircraft and cargo.

Meanwhile, Pakistan International Airlines is gearing up for flights to Britain, and in initial phase, at least 22 weekly flights will be departed. The airline has invited bids for in-flight catering services at London, Manchester, and Birmingham airports, with submissions due by June 27, 2024.

The incumbent government further enforced Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 for six months, allowing PIA to take punitive actions against employees who disobey lawful orders. This measure aims to ensure uninterrupted airline operations.
