Eddie Murphy Reflects on SNL Feud with David Spade: Alleges Racism
1. Eddie Murphy talked about how controversial SNL joke with David Spade affected him
Eddie Murphy recently discussed a long-standing dispute with David Spade.
In an interview with The New York Times, Murphy recounted how a "cheap shot" targeting his career during a "Hollywood Minute" sketch on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1995 deeply affected him.
"In those days, they were relentless towards me, and much of it was racially tinged," he remarked, noting, "There was no Black Hollywood. No rappers, no hip-hop. It was the '80s."
The joke, referencing Murphy's film *Vampire in Brooklyn* and labeling him a "falling star," caught him off guard and hurt his feelings.
Murphy continued, "I was the biggest thing to come out of that show. The show might not have survived without my return, and now someone from the cast makes a jab about my career?"
"I thought, 'Seriously? My career?' So I considered it a low blow. And I felt it had racial undertones," the actor asserted.
