Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russia on Wednesday, with Russian officials reporting that air defense units intercepted several drones. Three drones were shot down approximately 38 kilometers (24 miles) south of the Kremlin, and 15 more were intercepted over the Bryansk region near the border.
Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed on Telegram that the three drones heading toward Moscow were downed over the city of Podolsk in the Moscow region. "According to preliminary data, there is no damage or casualties at the site where the debris fell," Sobyanin stated.
In the Bryansk region, southwest of Russia, Governor Alexander Bogomaz also reported no casualties or damage from the drone attack.
Additionally, Russia's RIA state news agency reported the destruction of two drones over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to the north.
In a separate incident, Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region in southwestern Russia, announced that air defense forces had intercepted a missile launched by Ukraine, with no injuries reported.
The total number of drones and missiles launched by Ukraine remains unclear. Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate response from Ukraine.
Kyiv has intensified its air attacks on Russian territory in recent months, stating that its goal is to target infrastructure crucial to Moscow's war efforts. Ukraine also claims these attacks are in retaliation for Russia's ongoing strikes on Ukrainian soil.
