South Korean actress Lee Joo Sil has passed away at the age of 80.

The veteran star, known for her role in the second season of the globally popular Netflix series Squid Game, had been battling illness for decades. Diagnosed with a terminal disease 30 years ago, Lee was told she had only a month to live but managed to defy the odds. However, the illness resurfaced, and last year, she revealed in an interview on MBN’s Special World that she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer once again.

According to The Chosun Ilbo, Lee passed away today at her family's home in Uijeongbu. Her cremation will take place at the Shinchon Severance Hospital.

Upon hearing the heartbreaking news, fans quickly took to social media to share their condolences. One fan wrote, "Actress Lee Joo Sil, who played Somun’s grandmother in The Uncanny Counter, passes away today. Condolences. May she rest in peace." Another simply posted, "RIP Lee Joo Sil."

The 80-year-old also portrayed Hwang Joon-ho’s mother in Squid Game season 2.
