In the wake of the alleged arrests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers within Parliament House, the government and opposition unanimously passed a resolution on Wednesday to form a 16-member committee to address parliamentary issues. The resolution, proposed by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, aims to establish a committee with members from both treasury and opposition benches to discuss and recommend solutions for the smooth functioning of Parliament.
The resolution followed heightened political tensions after several PTI lawmakers were arrested for allegedly violating the newly enacted Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024, during a rally in Islamabad. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, presiding over the session, suspended the House's Sergeant at Arms and four security officials for their failure to prevent the arrests by masked men and Islamabad police within the Parliament's premises.
**"Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right"**
During the session, Speaker Sadiq reflected on PTI's tenure under Imran Khan, criticizing the then-speaker Asad Qaiser for denying production orders for opposition members. While condemning the practice, he emphasized that "two wrongs don’t make a right" and assured he would uphold the Parliament's dignity by doing what is necessary to ensure its proper functioning.
Sadiq also announced that the committee to address the current situation would be formed immediately and invited PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to meet him after the session.
**Masked Men in Parliament: "Shameful"**
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif condemned the entry of masked men and police officers into Parliament, calling it "shameful" and a violation of the institution's sanctity. He expressed no objection to issuing production orders for the arrested PTI lawmakers but stressed that such incidents harm the integrity of Parliament. He also criticized PTI's behavior during their rally, accusing them of crossing lines, but emphasized that the presence of police in Parliament was unacceptable.
**PTI Calls for Dialogue**
PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan called for a way forward through dialogue, stressing the importance of finding solutions for the country's and democracy’s sake. He mentioned that discussions had taken place with leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regarding the issuance of production orders for PTI lawmakers. Despite verbal assurances from the speaker to the Islamabad police, the orders were not implemented.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan echoed the call for dialogue, stating that production orders are a right of the arrested lawmakers and do not require a written request. He reaffirmed PTI's commitment to strengthening Parliament and political institutions.
**Parliament Attack: "Unjustified and Condemnable"**
Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai voiced his support for upholding the Constitution and maintaining Parliament's supremacy. He condemned the attack on Parliament during PTI’s rally, calling it "unjustified and highly condemnable." Achakzai emphasized that such actions should not be tolerated and urged that all institutions must operate within their constitutional limits.
