Pakistan seeks stronger UK ties after Keir Starmer's win

Pakistan has congratulated UK Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer following his Labour Party's landslide victory in the British general elections. Labour secured a massive majority in the 650-seat parliament, marking a significant shift in British politics. The Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, experienced their worst performance in history, losing around 250 lawmakers due to public dissatisfaction over the cost of living crisis, failing public services, and various scandals.
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar extended his congratulations to Starmer on X, expressing optimism about strengthening the ties between Pakistan and the UK, which are rooted in shared history and people-to-people contacts. Dar expressed confidence that under Starmer's leadership, the relationship between the two countries would grow stronger, and they could collaborate for global peace, prosperity, and development.
The election results have dramatically changed the political landscape in the UK, with Labour winning over 410 seats, more than doubling their previous count, while the Conservatives faced a significant defeat. Rishi Sunak conceded defeat and prepared to resign, paving the way for Keir Starmer to be formally appointed by King Charles.
In his victory speech, Starmer emphasized the beginning of change and national renewal, promising to end chaos and rebuild the country. This victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Starmer and the Labour Party, which had faced a potential existential crisis just three years ago.
