Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, has emphasized the necessity for sophisticated small arms and modern equipment to ensure the success of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. The operation, recently approved by the federal government, is a revitalized national counter-terrorism effort aimed at eradicating terrorism within Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reassured that this operation is not a large-scale military initiative and will not lead to the displacement of local populations. He clarified that the operation is targeted and precise in its scope.

Speaking at an event organized by Wilson Center’s South Asia Institute in partnership with the International Academy of Letters USA in Washington, DC, Ambassador Khan stated, "Pakistan has launched Azm-e-Istehkam to oppose and dismantle terrorist networks. For that, we need sophisticated small arms and communication equipment."

During the conference titled 'Looking Back, Looking Forward: Assessing the US-Pakistan Relationship,' Khan underscored the importance of continuing to strengthen the relationship between Pakistan and the United States. He highlighted the need for strong security links, enhanced intelligence cooperation, and the resumption of sales of advanced military platforms and sustainment of Pakistan’s US-origin defense equipment.

"This is crucial for regional security and opposing the rising tide of terrorism that also threatens the interests of the US and its allies," Khan noted.

He stressed that the bilateral ties should be grounded in practical realities while aiming for stronger security and economic partnerships. "One or two issues should not hold the entire relationship hostage," he added.

Khan also highlighted Pakistan's demographic dividend, technological advancements, and significant market opportunities, inviting US investors and businesses to explore these potentials.

Projecting security, economic, and strategic cooperation as new domains for collaboration between the two countries, Khan noted that security cooperation is vital for building trust. He mentioned the importance of high-level defense talks, frequent meetings, and military exercises such as Inspired Union-2024, Falcon Talon, and Red Flag, which promote defense cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.

Additionally, Khan proposed that the US consider making Pakistan a partner in any planned diplomatic initiatives in Kabul and work collaboratively on counterterrorism efforts and the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
