North Korea tests new ballistic missiles with 'super-large warhead'

SEOUL: North Korea conducted tests on new tactical ballistic missiles equipped with super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles on Wednesday, as leader Kim Jong Un called for enhanced conventional weapons and nuclear capabilities, according to state news agency KCNA.
Kim, who oversaw the tests, emphasized the need to strengthen the country’s military capabilities due to the serious threats posed by external forces. KCNA reported that these tests aim to improve North Korea's weapons systems.
The tests came after South Korea's military reported the launch of multiple short-range ballistic missiles, marking the second missile test by North Korea within a week.
Last week, North Korea also revealed a uranium enrichment facility, marking the first public report of such a development.
Kim underscored the importance of continuing to bolster North Korea’s nuclear arsenal while also developing superior military technology and overwhelming offensive capabilities in conventional weapons, according to KCNA.
The tests on Wednesday featured the new tactical ballistic missile, Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5, which KCNA identified as part of North Korea’s ongoing short-range ballistic missile development. The missile was fitted with a 4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead, KCNA said.
North Korean state media previously reported on similar missile tests in July, which were described as partially successful. On Thursday, state media released photos showing a projectile hitting a target in a hilly area.
South Korea's military confirmed that two ballistic missiles landed in the northeastern mountainous region of North Korea on Thursday.
Shin Seung-ki, head of research on North Korea's military at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul, noted that such inland missile tests are rare. North Korea typically conducts missile tests that target the sea or uninhabited islands.
The Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 missile is still under development, but Shin suggested that Russia might express interest in it if further testing ensures its performance and reliability. "North Korea will aim to expedite this process," Shin added.
There have been indications, according to Kyiv officials and independent experts, that some of the missiles used by Russia in its war against Ukraine were North Korean-made, including those produced this year. Both Moscow and Pyongyang deny any illegal arms trade or shipments.
KCNA also reported that North Korea tested an upgraded strategic cruise missile designed for combat use.
North Korea has criticized joint military drills between South Korea and the United States, including a large-scale exercise this summer, as preparations for war on the Korean peninsula. The allies, however, maintain that the drills are defensive and intended to ensure readiness against any potential North Korean aggression.
