Muharram security: Sindh bans 143 ulema, zakireen for 60 days
1. Speeches, travel of 143 religious scholars hailing from 13 districts has been banned, says Sindh Home Department
The Sindh government has banned 143 ulema and zakireen for 60 days as part of security measures during the month of Muharram, which is expected to begin on July 8. According to a notification issued by the Sindh Home Department, these individuals will not be allowed to travel or deliver speeches during this period. This decision is based on recommendations from the inspector general of police, with the aim of maintaining law and order during the Islamic month.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and is one of the four sacred Islamic months. It commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAWW), and his family members. During this month, processions and majalis (gatherings) are held across the country, with religious scholars addressing large gatherings under tight security.
In addition to these measures, provincial governments have proposed suspending six social media applications for about a week during Muharram to prevent the spread of hate material and misinformation. The Punjab government specifically recommended this suspension from Muharram 6 to 11, citing concerns about sectarian violence. The social media platforms affected would include Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. However, the federal government has not yet decided to suspend internet services during Muharram.
Meanwhile, the central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to meet in Quetta on Saturday to sight the crescent of Muharram (1446 Hijri), with Chairman Moulana Abdul Khabir Azad presiding over the meeting. Zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also hold meetings at their respective headquarters.
