ISLAMABAD: The federal government announced on Thursday that a public holiday will be observed on November 9 (Saturday) in honor of Iqbal Day.

The day commemorates the 147th birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal, widely known as the "Poet of the East." He was a prominent figure who inspired millions of Muslims in the subcontinent to seek independence from British colonial rule and to establish their own homeland.

Born in Sialkot in 1877, Iqbal was not only a renowned poet but also a philosopher and political thinker. His poetry and political influence played a crucial role in advocating for the creation of a separate homeland for Muslims.

Iqbal’s famous Allahabad Address in 1930 was a turning point in pre-partition politics, outlining a vision for the Muslims of the subcontinent and a distinct path toward the formation of Pakistan.

Iqbal Day is observed with special prayers in mosques for the country’s progress and prosperity, a Change of Guards ceremony at his mausoleum in Lahore, and various events nationwide to honor the national poet.

In addition, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced that all banks will remain closed on Iqbal Day.
