Expected cooking oil, ghee prices in Pakistan from July after Budget 2024-25
1.
LAHORE – Recently, the prices of ghee and cooking oil in Pakistan have seen a significant decline, providing much-needed relief to the inflation-stricken populace. The drop, up to Rs75 per kilogram, comes in the wake of measures taken by the newly-formed government to ease inflationary pressures.
Despite the current relief, prices are expected to rise again following the federal budget for fiscal year 2024-25. The government, aligning with International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions, plans to introduce various taxes to generate an additional revenue of Rs2,000 billion.
Reports indicate that the government may increase the sales tax rate by one percent, which would contribute to inflation and affect the prices of essential items like cooking oil and ghee.
**Current Cooking Oil and Ghee Prices in Pakistan:**
- **Brand A Cooking Oil:** Reduced by Rs75, now priced at Rs525 per liter.
- **Brand A Ghee:** Reduced by Rs25.
- **Brand B Cooking Oil and Ghee:** Dropped by Rs70, now priced at Rs380 per liter.
**Expected Prices in July 2024:**
If the proposed one percent increase in the sales tax rate is approved and implemented in the budget, the prices of cooking oil and ghee are expected to rise accordingly starting from July 2024.
