Algerian boxer Imane Khelif initiates legal action over gender allegations
1. Reports published in France this week claimed Khelif, 25, has XY, or male, chromosomes
Algerian Olympic gold medallist Imane Khelif is taking legal steps in response to media coverage related to alleged leaked medical records, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Wednesday, as reported by AFP.
This week, French media alleged that the 25-year-old Khelif has XY, or male, chromosomes.
The controversy arose during the Paris Games in August, following Khelif’s swift victory over Angela Carini, who left the match in tears. The incident fueled a public debate, with reactions from prominent figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling.
"We understand that Imane Khelif has initiated legal action against individuals who commented on her case during the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and is preparing to address the recent media reports legally as well," the IOC noted, adding it would refrain from further comments during ongoing proceedings.
The IOC highlighted that Khelif has consistently competed in the women’s division, including at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, IBA world championships, and other IBA events. The IOC also voiced concern, stating it was "saddened by the abuse that Imane Khelif is currently enduring."
After her Olympic success, Khelif was warmly welcomed back in Algeria and has since filed a complaint in France for online harassment.
