KHYBER: Senior journalist Khalil Jibran was killed by unidentified gunmen near his residence in Landi Kotal town, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police reported on Wednesday.
Jibran, associated with the private news channel Khyber News, was attacked by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle while heading home with his friend Sajjad Advocate. District Police Officer (DPO) Khyber, Salim Abbas, explained that Jibran's car developed a fault near his home, at which point the gunmen surrounded him, dragged him out of his vehicle, and opened fire.
Jibran, a former president of the Landi Kotal Press Club, died on the spot. Sajjad Advocate was wounded, and the culprits fled the scene. Jibran's body was taken to a Landi Kotal hospital for a post-mortem examination, the police officer added.
The incident occurred in the Mazreena area, near the Landi Kotal Police Station. Abbas noted that Jibran had previously received threats from terrorists.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has taken notice of the incident and ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible. KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also condemned Jibran's murder.
The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) strongly condemned the murder and demanded that the KP Chief Minister and the federal interior minister bring Jibran's killers to justice. The association criticized higher authorities for failing to prevent such incidents, highlighting the ongoing threats and violence faced by journalists across the country.
Last month, another journalist, Nasrullah Gadani of a Sindhi newspaper, was attacked by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants near Korai Goth, 12 kilometers from Mirpur Mathelo, leaving him seriously wounded on May 21.
Gadani was riding his motorcycle at the time of the attack. He was initially taken to Civil Hospital Mirpur Mathelo for emergency medical aid and later sent to Rahim Yar Khan for surgery. Subsequently, he was transferred to Karachi via air ambulance for better treatment, with the Sindh government covering all medical costs. Despite these efforts, Gadani succumbed to his wounds three days later.
