Marlene Engelhorn, an Austrian heiress who inherited millions of euros from her grandmother, Traudl Engelhorn-Vechiatto, has made a unique decision regarding her substantial wealth. Seeking to embrace democratic principles in wealth distribution, Marlene reached out to 50 randomly-selected Austrian nationals to help decide how to allocate her inheritance, which amounts to a staggering $27 million.
The group, known as the "Good Council for Redistribution," has presented a comprehensive plan for Marlene to distribute her wealth among various charitable organizations. This plan includes allocating funds to 77 different charities over the course of several years, with a focus on supporting causes such as women's shelters, children's charities, and organizations dedicated to addressing the climate crisis.
The largest portion of the wealth is earmarked for environmental organizations like Naturschutzbund Osterreich, with other beneficiaries potentially including the World Inequality Lab, Reporters Without Borders, and Catholic Charity Caritas.
The decision-making process involved the 50 chosen individuals meeting over six weekends and consulting with experts from various fields, including poverty research and law. Marlene ensured that all participants were provided with travel expenses and childcare support to facilitate their involvement.
Marlene has been vocal about her advocacy for wealth redistribution and has previously expressed support for the implementation of inheritance tax laws. In a statement, she emphasized the importance of aligning her actions with democratic values, acknowledging the privilege conferred upon her by her inherited wealth and seeking to redistribute it in a manner consistent with principles of fairness and equality.
