'Why fish only cut Pakistan's cable': Bilawal slams PML-N govt over 'internet slowdown'

Bilawal Bhutto Criticizes Internet Infrastructure and Federal Government Policies
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari criticized the PML-N-led federal government for neglecting modern digital infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of internet speed and digitalization in today’s world. Speaking to journalists in Ratodero, Bilawal questioned the priorities of the government, contrasting their focus on motorways, which he called "infrastructure of the 90s," with the need for advancements in internet infrastructure.
The remarks come amidst ongoing internet disruptions across Pakistan, causing difficulties for users in browsing, downloading, and sharing media. Bilawal sarcastically remarked on the recurring excuse of undersea internet cables being cut by "fish" while highlighting Pakistan's poor rankings in internet speeds. According to Ookla Speedtest Global Index, Pakistan ranks 100th out of 111 countries in mobile internet speeds and 141st out of 158 countries in broadband speeds.
"They should have increased the internet speed instead of reducing it," Bilawal said, criticizing the inconsistent statements from the government regarding the internet outages. "Why bother with VPNs when the public doesn't even have reliable high-speed internet?" he quipped.
Criticism of Federal Policies
Bilawal also addressed other grievances against the PML-N-led federal government, accusing it of unilateral decision-making. Referring to controversial water projects, he said, "Water is a fundamental right, and the PPP has always worked to resolve people's issues." He warned against projects violating the IRSA (Indus River System Authority) agreement, labeling them as detrimental to smaller provinces.
Drawing parallels with the Kalabagh Dam, which the PPP opposed, Bilawal emphasized that such unilateral decisions would not be tolerated. "The federal government must treat all provinces fairly and ensure mutual consultation on developmental budgets," he said.
Views on Economy and Foreign Interference
Commenting on the economy, Bilawal acknowledged its apparent improvement "on paper" but stressed that benefits must reach the people. He expressed skepticism about foreign interference, particularly statements from US lawmakers concerning Pakistan's internal politics.
Bilawal dismissed these remarks as "political statements," accusing those who leverage conspiracy theories for political gains of being "dangerous for Pakistan." He reiterated that international powers are targeting Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programs under the guise of political statements, calling such interference unacceptable.
“PTI founder is just an excuse; their real target is Pakistan’s nuclear and missile program,” Bilawal warned, asserting that the PPP would defend the country’s sovereignty and provide relief to the people despite limited resources.
