Weatherman predicts below-normal rainfall this winter
1. "There are no chances of rain in December in Balochistan," says chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz
QUETTA: While snowfall and cold weather grip many parts of the country, Balochistan is bracing for a dry and rain-scarce winter this year, Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz announced on Tuesday.
Sarfaraz predicted below-average rainfall for the province, with no significant rain expected in December. "There are no chances of rain this month, and Balochistan will experience dry and cold conditions throughout," he stated.
He noted that while light rain and snowfall might occur in early January, overall rainfall for the month is also expected to remain below normal levels. The prolonged dry spell could impact agriculture and water resources, prompting the chief meteorologist to advise residents to prepare for the cold and dry weather.
Over the past 24 hours, the weather in Quetta valley and surrounding districts remained extremely cold under clear skies. Temperatures fell below freezing in several areas after Saturday, with the provincial capital recording a low of -4°C, while Kalat registered -6°C.
Daily life in the region is being disrupted by freezing temperatures compounded by unannounced gas and electricity outages.
The cold wave in Balochistan is also affecting parts of Sindh, particularly Karachi, where a mild cold wave has set in. Northeasterly winds from Balochistan often influence the port city's weather, making conditions even colder when it snows in Quetta.
