US lawmakers call for probe into irregularities in Pakistan's Feb 8 polls
1. Resolution will not have much impact on US policy towards Pakistan, says Michael Kugelman
The United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly supported a resolution emphasizing democracy and human rights in Pakistan, calling for an impartial investigation into the February 8 general election. The resolution was passed with 368 votes in favor and seven against. It stresses the importance of Pakistani public participation in democracy and condemns any attempts to suppress it through harassment, intimidation, or other violations of rights.
The resolution also criticized any efforts to undermine Pakistan's political, electoral, or judicial processes. Michael Kugelman from The Wilson Center highlighted the significant margin of the vote, noting that 85% of House members participated, with 98% supporting the resolution. While the resolution may not significantly impact US policy toward Pakistan, it aligns with the Biden administration's call for an investigation into the election irregularities.
