On February 6, President Donald Trump revealed plans to create a Department of Justice (DOJ) task force aimed at addressing "anti-Christian bias" within the federal government.

Trump made the announcement at the Washington Hilton during one of two National Prayer Breakfast events, where he also disclosed that he would sign an executive order to appoint Attorney General Pam Bondi as the head of the new task force.

"The mission of this task force will be to immediately end all forms of anti-Christian targeting and discrimination within the federal government, including the DOJ, the IRS, the FBI, and other agencies," Trump stated.

He emphasized that the task force would focus on prosecuting violence and vandalism against Christians and religious believers, and vowed to "defend the rights of Christians and religious believers nationwide."

Trump referenced controversies from the Biden administration, including the prosecution of pro-life protesters under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which resulted in several individuals being sentenced to prison time. Trump had pardoned 23 of these individuals shortly after taking office.

The FBI also faced criticism after a leaked memo categorized traditional Catholics as violent extremists and proposed surveillance of them within their churches. The IRS had previously come under fire for its scrutiny of conservative and Christian groups during the Obama administration.

"If we don’t have religious liberty, then we don’t have a free country," Trump remarked. "We probably don’t even have a country."

Along with the task force, the president announced the creation of a new White House Faith Office, led by Pastor Paula White, and a Presidential Commission on Religious Liberty.
