HAIPHONG: The most powerful storm in Asia this year made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, according to the meteorological agency. The typhoon has claimed at least four lives and injured 78 people after wreaking havoc in China's Hainan and the Philippines.
Typhoon Yagi struck the island districts of northern Vietnam around 1 p.m., with winds reaching 160 km/h (99 mph) near its center, down from its peak intensity of 234 km/h (145 mph) recorded in Hainan a day earlier.
The storm has also left a dozen people missing at sea, with state media reporting that Yagi previously caused at least two deaths in Hainan and 16 in the Philippines, its initial point of impact.
The coastal city of Haiphong, home to 2 million people, faced winds up to 90 km/h, resulting in widespread power outages and significant damage. Strong gusts shattered windows, and high waves battered the coast. The typhoon caused metal roofing sheets to be blown away, downed thousands of trees, and damaged many homes across northern Vietnam.
In Hainan, the storm disrupted daily life for its more than 10 million residents, causing extensive tree fall, flooding, and power outages affecting over 800,000 households.
Vietnam has evacuated over 50,000 people from coastal areas and mobilized 450,000 military personnel. The government temporarily closed four airports, including Hanoi's Noi Bai, which canceled more than 300 flights. High schools in 12 northern provinces, including Hanoi, were closed. Public transport, including buses and metro lines in the capital, was suspended, and authorities have warned of potential heavy flooding in the city center."
