SC suspends LHC's verdict, ECP's notification in tribunals case
1. ECP moved apex court against LHC's decision constituting 8 election tribunals for hearing polls cases
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has suspended the Lahore High Court's decision to form additional election tribunals and the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) April 26 notification. This suspension came as a five-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa, heard the ECP's plea against the LHC's earlier verdict.
The ECP contended that the power to appoint election tribunals rested solely with the electoral body, as stipulated in the Constitution, and did not require consultation with the Chief Justice of the high court concerned for allocating territorial jurisdiction to such tribunals. The court highlighted the lack of communication between the ECP and the LHC and emphasized the need for meaningful consultations between the two parties. The case has been adjourned until such consultations are held.
