Messi's fitness remains in doubt ahead of Copa America quarter-final
1. Scaloni says he will consult with the 37-year-old Messi about his readiness for the game
Lionel Messi's fitness remains uncertain ahead of Thursday's Copa America quarter-final match against Ecuador. Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni stated he would make a decision on Messi's participation after a training session on Wednesday. Messi, who missed Argentina's last group stage match due to a sore right hamstring, will be consulted about his readiness.
Scaloni rotated his squad in the previous match against Peru, having already secured qualification to the knockout stage. If Messi is not ready to start, Scaloni may opt for a twin striker formation with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. Lautaro is the top scorer in the tournament with four goals, while Alvarez scored in the opening game against Canada.
Ecuador's coach Felix Sanchez mentioned that Argentina's game plan is consistent, with or without Messi, and emphasized the need to be prepared for either scenario.
