K-Electric to hike bills by Rs0.4 per unit in January
1. Charge applies to all consumer categories except EVCS, lifeline consumers, and prepaid metering users
ISLAMABAD: Karachi electricity consumers will face an additional charge of Rs0.4013 per unit on their January 2025 bills, following approval by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for K-Electric’s fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for August 2024, as reported by *The News*.
This adjustment will allow K-Electric to collect Rs674 million in one month, with the addition of 18% GST bringing the total amount to Rs795 million. The charge will apply to all consumer categories, except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), lifeline consumers, and prepaid meter users.
K-Electric had initially requested Rs0.51 per unit, but after a public hearing on October 3 and a review of the submitted data, Nepra approved Rs0.4013 per unit based on the interim reference tariff set in March 2023.
In December, K-Electric was permitted to charge an additional Rs3.0362 per unit, which impacted consumers by Rs6.105 billion. The regulator also authorized extra charges of Rs2.5934 per unit for October and Rs3.1688 per unit for November, linked to fuel charge adjustments for May and June 2024.
Recently, K-Electric filed a petition with Nepra, offering to refund Rs0.16 per unit to consumers as part of the monthly FCA for September 2024, amounting to approximately Rs247 million. This marks the first time in a long period that K-Electric is willing to refund consumers.
