In a statement released on Sunday, the prison services in Rostov, southern Russia, announced that two prison officers have been taken hostage by inmates affiliated with the Islamic State.

The incident occurred at detention centre Number One in the Rostov region, where negotiations for the release of the hostages are currently underway.

According to a police source interviewed by the state news agency TASS, among the hostage takers are members of the Islamic State who are facing terrorism charges in court.

Russia has been targeted by several attacks claimed by the organization. One of the deadliest occurred on March 22, when gunmen opened fire at a concert hall near Moscow, resulting in the deaths of at least 144 people and injuries to hundreds more. Since then, over 20 individuals, including the four suspected attackers from the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan, have been arrested.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
