France and UK Propose One-Month Truce in Ukraine

PARIS/LONDON – France and the United Kingdom have jointly proposed a one-month truce in Ukraine, focusing on air, sea, and energy infrastructure, following high-level crisis talks in London, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Sunday, AFP reported.

Ceasefire Proposal and Monitoring Challenges

Speaking to Le Figaro, Macron clarified that while the truce would cover critical infrastructure, it would not immediately extend to ground combat, citing the difficulty of monitoring compliance across Ukraine’s vast frontline. He added that peacekeepers could be deployed later but ruled out the presence of European troops in Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Call for Increased European Defense Spending

Macron also urged European nations to boost their defense budgets, proposing an increase to 3.0–3.5% of GDP. He stressed that this was necessary due to Russia’s rising military investments and shifting U.S. priorities.

"For three years, Russia has been allocating 10% of its GDP to defense. We must prepare for what lies ahead," he warned.

Italy’s Role and Meloni’s Response

In a separate interview with Italy’s Il Foglio, Macron highlighted Italy’s crucial role in addressing the Ukraine crisis. However, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed the idea of her country participating in a peacekeeping mission, stating it was "never on the agenda."

"We need Italy—a strong Italy—working alongside France and Germany within the framework of major global powers," Macron stated, emphasizing the need for European unity in navigating the ongoing conflict.
