DNC 'surprise guest' speculation grips social media
1. The Democratic convention's organisers have been tight-lipped about the identity of the special guest
Speculation ran wild online Thursday about the much-anticipated special guest for the final night of the Democratic National Convention, with names like Beyoncé and George W. Bush being thrown into the mix.
Beyoncé was a hot topic on social media leading up to Vice President Kamala Harris's primetime address. Celebrity gossip site TMZ stoked the flames with a headline in all caps on its homepage declaring "PERFORMING AT DNC'S FINAL NIGHT!!!" alongside a photo of the music icon.
Taylor Swift's name also circulated in both media and political circles, with celebrity watchers tracking the whereabouts of private jets the pop star has previously used.
Even former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, now a U.S. senator who has criticized former President Donald Trump, felt compelled to deny rumors that he would be the surprise guest.
"Contrary to fake news posts, I am not the surprise guest at the DNC tonight. My guess is that it will be Beyoncé or Taylor Swift," Romney posted on X. "So disappointing, I know!"
Another possibility floated was fellow Republican George W. Bush, with the "Republicans Against Trump" account sharing a photo of Bush embracing then-First Lady Michelle Obama to its 765,000 followers on X.
Adding a humorous twist, one person suggested the guest could be the divisive figure Raygun, whose breakdancing at the Paris Olympics became fodder for countless memes.
Convention organizers have remained tight-lipped about the special guest's identity.
