Republican candidate Donald Trump's presidential campaign received a significant financial boost of $50 million (£39.5m) from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, according to a federal filing on Thursday.

The contribution was reported to the Federal Election Commission by the Super-PAC fund called "MAGA Inc," which disclosed receiving over $68 million from donors last month, as reported by BBC.

Timothy Mellon, an heir to the Pittsburgh-based Mellon banking family, contributed $50 million, with an additional $10 million coming from billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein, according to Reuters. Reports from US media indicated that Mellon made the donation the day after Trump was convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records in his New York hush-money trial.

Mellon has previously supported independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr., providing at least $20 million to the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC American Values.

Super-PACs, independent "political action committees," can raise unlimited amounts of money to support election candidates. Mellon's contributions have enabled pro-Trump allies to outspend President Joe Biden's allies in recent campaign efforts.

Timothy Mellon, known for his passion for aviation and his involvement in transport-related companies, resides in Wyoming and maintains a low public profile. The Mellon family's estimated net worth is approximately $14.1 billion, according to Forbes.
