PCB threatens legal action over ‘baseless’ match-fixing claims following T20 World Cup exit

Pakistan's disappointing performances against the USA and India in the T20 World Cup 2024 have resulted in the team's elimination from the first round, leaving fans deeply disappointed. The unexpected loss to the inexperienced host team and a defeat from a winning position against their traditional rival have sparked widespread criticism and anger among supporters.

Despite victories against Canada and Ireland, the team's overall performance has been deemed unacceptable, leading to harsh scrutiny from former players and fans on social media. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had anticipated such backlash, but allegations of match-fixing have exacerbated the situation, further unsettling the players.

Reports have emerged of discussions by YouTubers and journalists regarding these allegations, which have gained traction in the Indian media as well. However, team sources maintain that there is no evidence implicating any player in such activities during matches in the USA. ICC anti-corruption officials and the team's security manager have closely monitored everyone, and key players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shadab Khan have clean records with no involvement in any negative activities.

In response to the allegations, PCB sources emphasized that while constructive criticism is acceptable, baseless accusations of match-fixing cannot be tolerated. The board has instructed its legal department to issue notices to individuals making such claims and demand concrete evidence. Failure to provide evidence will result in legal action, including compensation for defamation, under a new law in Punjab that expedites such cases within six months.

Additionally, an unfortunate incident involving Haris Rauf has heightened concerns among players about their security. Some players, including Babar Azam, are hesitant to return home immediately due to fears of facing similar incidents in public. The PCB has assured the team of full protection and urged players to report any issues promptly. Nevertheless, the toxic environment created by social media, certain TV experts, and YouTubers has instilled fear among players, affecting their willingness to venture out in public.
