Former opening batter Gautam Gambhir appears to be the leading candidate for the position of head coach of the Indian cricket team, with reports indicating that he is the sole applicant for the prestigious role.

The 42-year-old, known for his dynamic left-handed batting style and amassing over 10,000 international runs for India across three formats, recently guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the IPL.

Applications for the head coach position closed on May 27, with Gambhir reportedly being the only individual to submit his candidacy. His interview was scheduled for Tuesday, as reported by the Indian Express and The Times of India, citing sources from the BCCI.

The BCCI has yet to make an official statement regarding the selection process.

The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, will step down after the T20 World Cup, leaving the vacancy to be filled for the team's leadership until the next ODI World Cup in 2027.

While initial reports suggested other contenders like Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, and Justin Langer, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has dismissed such claims, stating that no Australians were approached for coaching offers.
