What exciting new feature is WhatsApp working on now?
1. Meta's instant messaging app explores new feature to bring refreshed look in scheduled future update
WhatsApp is working on an exciting update that will introduce vibrant new themed icons for contacts and group chats, offering users a refreshed look and easier visual identification.
Currently, icons for contacts, groups, and communities appear in a neutral grey color, providing a simple, uniform appearance for those without profile pictures, according to WABetaInfo. However, the upcoming update will bring in colorful icons, allowing users to quickly recognize specific contacts and groups at a glance, as each chat will have its own distinct color.
This feature draws inspiration from the color-coded icons seen in the Android address book, where each contact is visually distinguished by a unique color. If a contact does not have a profile picture or has chosen to hide it due to privacy settings, WhatsApp will automatically display a themed icon with a specific color scheme, making it easier to identify contacts—even if their names are similar or absent.
Similarly, for group chats and communities without a designated image, the new themed icons will help users differentiate between groups with identical names. Each group will be assigned a distinct color and design, making it simpler to identify them without having to open each chat.
This feature is still under development, but beta testers can explore it in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.24.12, available for download on the Google Play Store. Other users will need to wait for a future update to access the new feature.
